PROFILE OF PROF. FREDERICK YEBOAH OBESE
Prof. Frederick Yeboah Obese is an experienced Animal Scientist in the area of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition. Prof. Obese holds the degrees of BSc (Agriculture) 1990 and MSc (Animal Science) 1996 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and PhD in Animal Science 2004 from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He joined the Department of Animal Science at the University of Ghana on appointment as Senior Lecturer in 2010 having previously worked as Senior Research Scientist at the Animal Research Institute (ARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR, Ghana). By dint of hard work he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 2015 and Full Professor in 2019.
Prof. Obese teaches courses in Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition at the Department of Animal Science and at the School of Veterinary Medicine in the University of Ghana and has supervised several dissertations and theses. He has conducted relevant research in the area of Reproductive endocrinology and physiology in livestock, Animal nutrition, Animal biotechnology, and Climate change and livestock production. He has been involved in the development of supplementary feed packages for improved growth and reproductive performance of ruminant livestock, and worked extensively in characterizing the small-holder dairy production systems in Ghana. Prof. Obese has research experience working with partners from Australia, United States of America, United Kingdom and African countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda. He has participated in a number of conferences and presented papers as well as authored or co-authored several articles in both local and international peer-reviewed journals of repute in Animal Science, including the Journal of Animal Science, Journal of Dairy Science, Animal Frontiers, Domestic Animal Endocrinology, Theriogenology, Reproduction in Domestic Animals, Poultry Science, British Poultry Science, Animal Feed Science and Technology, Livestock Science, Veterinary Medicine and Science, Canadian Journal of Animal Science, Tropical Animal Health and Production, and the Ghana Journal of Agricultural Science.
Prof. Obese was Vice - President of the Ghana Society of Animal Production (GSAP) from 2007 to 2011, Associate Editor of the Ghanaian Journal of Animal Science from 2007 to 2017 and was inducted Fellow of the Society (FGSAP) in 2015. He is currently the Associate Editor-In-Chief of the Ghanaian Journal of Animal Science, the official Journal of the GSAP, and a member of the Editorial Board of Translational Animal Science, an official journal of the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS). He is a reviewer for a number of reputed international journals including Animal Frontiers, Animal Reproduction Science, Animal Production Science, Translational Animal Science, Tropical Animal Health and Production, Canadian Journal of Animal Science, Applied Biological Chemistry, Journal of Applied Animal Research, Comparative Clinical Pathology, Egyptian Journal of Animal Production, and the Ghana Journal of Agricultural Science.
Prof. Obese has held several positions including, Head of Department of Animal Science, Chairman of the Graduate Studies Committee, and Departmental Teaching Assessment Committee, Department of Animal Science of the University of Ghana, Head of the Ruminant Production Division, and Coordinator of the Molecular Biology Laboratory in the ARI of the CSIR. He served on some national committees of agriculture in Ghana. He was leader (2013) and member (2012) of the National Best Farmer Selection Team, and also a member of the National Agricultural Research Project (NARP) Co-ordination Committee for livestock from 1998 to 2000 and serves on the Academic Boards of the University of Ghana, and the College of Basic and Applied Sciences of the University of Ghana. He is an External Examiner in Animal Science for graduate students, and Assessor for Promotion of Senior Faculty in a number of Public Universities in Ghana including, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, University for Development Studies, University of Education, Winneba (Mampong Campus), and the CSIR. He is also a Mentor for the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) Programme.
Prof. Obese has won a number of scholarships/awards including the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) / African Feed Resources Network (AFRNET) scholarship award for M.Sc degree programme at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Melbourne International Research Scholarship award for PhD research programme at the University of Melbourne in Australia, the United States Department of Agriculture award for Postdoctoral research programme at Auburn University in the USA, the Crawford Fund Award for collaborative research as Visiting Professor at the University of Western Australia, and the INTRA-ACP Mobility award as Visiting Scholar at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Tanzania. He was a member of the team that secured funding from DANIDA to set up the first Livestock Agribusiness Incubator known as “Creating Champions in Livestock Agribusiness (CCLEAR)” in Ghana.
